THERE IS A HOPE that burns within my heart,

Review There is a Hope 28 July 2008 Rating: Posted by: John Wilkins This is one of those few songs I've heard in recent years that have sent shivers down my spine ... Stuart Townend has a gift for expressing things I've wanted to say in prayer to the Lord, or to tell my friends how I feel about God, in a lyrical way which is both personal and yet not embarrassingly 'sugary-sweet'. The power of prayer seems to shine through in every phrase, and coming to the ending, you feel it's all been said. Outstanding.

Review Some comments on the sheet music 21 December 2008 Rating: Posted by: Derek Bishop Had a look at the sheet music and played through it on guitar. May end up deleting some of the chords. Would be good to be able to transpose on-line so that it can be played in another key with capo. The song is beautiful.

Review Beautiful song, but too high AND too low for most congregations 28 November 2009 Rating: Posted by: Julian Whettam I'm really frustrated about this song. It's a lovely song, and I spent ages playing it. The words are very good, well-written and uplifting. The tune is beautiful, lyrical, and works very well apart from one awkward corner ('everlasting arms'). I would change just a few of the chords to ones which work better, but that's no problem. The big problem is the vocal range. It starts impossibly low, and goes impossibly high - for a congregation, that is. Fine for a solo singer if it fits their range. But for a congregation the Gs and As below middle C are out of reach for many, if not most, and just disappear; and the high Es are just too high. They even sound strained on the recording. Stuart Townend, Mark Edwards, and plenty of other songwriters, please take note: it's important to be careful about the range of songs, and to know what an appropriate range is, because worshippers want to be thinking about God, not about how difficult it is to reach the notes or about how tight their vocal chords feel!
