Eoghan (pronounced 'Owen) Heaslip is a worship leader from Ireland.
I first came across him at this years NewWine festival. He led worship with such passion. Never before or since have I been at a worship event where the bass goes straight to your chest, the electric guitars are at a decent volume and the drummer is so crazily talented! It really was a brilliant week of worship, so I couldn't resist buying 'Wonderful Story' as soon as it was released!
The album opens with 'This Is Our Story'- a fantastic powerful song with a great melody line- even in the verses. It's plain and simple as Eoghan sings 'This is our story- Jesus died for you, for me' then builds to the excellent chorus of 'He has made a way for us, Jesus makes a way for us.'
The next track 'Blessing, Honour' is greatly improved from previous versions and deserves to be picked up by worship leaders across the world. Eoghan has the God given gifting to continue to resource the Church internationally.
A stand out track is 'The Way That You Father Me'. Songs about the father heart of God have been a bit hit and miss for me. There's the sheer brilliance of Matt Redman's 'The Father's Song'- possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Then there's the drearyness of 'Father Me' by Paul Oakley. (sorry Paul!) But Eoghan's effort is outstanding and the bridge of 'Our God is good, our God is faithful, our God is strong, our God is able' is one of my favourite sections of the entire album.
'All To You' is another song we sung at NewWine. It's a heartfelt surrender to God 'I give my life to you my king' he sings. There's a sensitivity and genuineness that really comes through the whole album, but particularly on this song.
The best lyric on the album comes from 'The King Has Come.' Eoghan has a real talent for writing melody lines that are interesting and a bit different musically, while still making sure they can be picked up easily by congregations. 'The King has come, and everything within this heart believes, that he is everything we'll ever need, Jesus, the King has come' really has to be heard to appreciated, so buy the album...
Albums can fade toward the end, but not this one. If you have a list of songs you like to listen to when you are a bit down, throw it away and buy this album. The final track 'With Me' may not stand out musically, but spiritually it cannot be faulted. It's a very uplifting track.
Worship music should constantly evolve. If it stops then our great grandchildren will still be stuck with 'How Great is Our God'! While this album may not pioneer a new genre or style of songs, it is still very fresh and different enough to bother buying! You probably won't buy it for the artwork, maybe not even for the music (!), but you can't fault these 10 tracks lyrically or spiritually. They will only increase your love of Jesus and encourage you to give all you have to him. (plus, if you are a musician, the chords come free inside the CD)
